Sunscreen Roller Blinds — Reduce Glare Without Losing Your View

Sunscreen roller blinds use an open-weave mesh fabric that filters UV rays and reduces glare while keeping your outlook visible from inside the room. Unlike blockout fabrics, sunscreen weaves allow you to see through the blind during the day — maintaining the connection to your garden, street, or view while protecting your interior from sun damage and heat build-up.

Our sunscreen range is available in a variety of openness factors — typically 1%, 3%, and 5% — which determine how much light and UV passes through the weave. A tighter 1% weave offers more privacy and glare control; a more open 5% weave is closer to unobstructed glass while still cutting UV. All blinds are custom made to measure and delivered across New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see through a sunscreen roller blind?

Yes — from inside the room during the day, you can see through a sunscreen blind to the outside. The view clarity depends on the openness factor: a 5% fabric gives a clearer view with less privacy control, while a 1% fabric is more like a tinted mesh — you can see outlines and movement, but the outside view is significantly reduced. At night when the interior is lit, the visibility reverses — people outside can see in through a sunscreen blind, so in the evening a blockout or privacy blind is a better choice.

What openness factor should I choose?

A 1% openness factor suits rooms where glare is the main problem and some privacy is wanted during the day (south-facing rooms, offices). A 3% factor is a popular all-rounder — good glare control with a reasonable view through. A 5% factor is closest to bare glass while still providing UV protection — ideal for rooms with great views where you want minimal visual change. Order a free sample swatch to hold up to your window before deciding.

Do sunscreen blinds provide privacy?

During the day, sunscreen blinds provide reasonable visual privacy because the inside of the room is darker relative to the bright exterior — it's hard to see in from outside. At night when lights are on inside, this reverses: the interior becomes brighter than outside and you can be seen through the blind. For evening privacy, a dual roller system (sunscreen during the day, blockout at night) is the best solution.

Do sunscreen blinds reduce heat in summer?

Yes — by intercepting a portion of the solar radiation before it enters the room, sunscreen fabrics can noticeably reduce heat build-up on sunny summer days. The tighter the weave (lower openness factor), the greater the solar heat reduction. They're particularly effective on north- and west-facing windows that receive direct afternoon sun.

Are sunscreen blinds suitable for all rooms?

Sunscreen blinds are ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, offices, and any space where you want to manage glare and UV while keeping daylight and view. They're not suitable as the sole window covering in bedrooms where darkness is important — for those, use a blockout blind or a dual system. They also work well on raked or skylight windows where glare control matters.
